Frequently Asked Questions.
01 — What exactly is art therapy?
Art therapy is a form of therapy that uses creative expression to help people process emotions, experiences, and identity. Sometimes, it's hard to put our thoughts into words, but art can speak for us in powerful ways. Through paint, fiber, collage, or digital media, we can explore what’s beneath the surface and find new meaning.
With the guidance of a registered art therapist, this process becomes a way to untangle emotion, reconnect with your story, and move toward healing.
Art therapy isn’t about making “good” art. It’s about making meaning. You don’t need to change who you are to heal.
02 — Do I need to be good at art to do this?
Not at all. Art therapy is about expression, not perfection. You don’t need to have any prior experience with art, just curiosity. Think of it as visual journaling or symbolic storytelling, using colors, textures, or movement to explore what words can’t reach. It’s a way to speak in shapes and threads when language feels too small.
03 — Will we always use fiber arts in sessions?
Not necessarily. While I often draw from fiber arts and metaphors like weaving, stitching, or unraveling, our sessions will use whatever medium feels most supportive to you. Whether that’s drawing, collage, visual journaling, photography, or even quiet reflection. Some individuals love tactile work; others prefer digital or verbal exploration. There’s no one right way to create here, just space to explore at your own pace.
04 — What happens in a session?
Every session is shaped by your needs and nervous system. Some days, we might make art the entire time. Some days, we might make art the entire time; other days might include talking, pausing, or grounding. You might draw, stitch, gather colors, or simply rest. There’s no pressure to perform, just permission to show up as you are.
05 — What’s the difference between art therapy and creative coaching?
Art therapy is a form of mental health treatment provided by a trained, credentialed therapist (that’s me!). It’s grounded in clinical ethics and trauma-informed, neurodivergent-affirming care. We might explore identity, grief, sensory regulation, or emotional processing through the lens of creativity.
Creative coaching is non-clinical and ideal for folks who want to reignite creativity, explore identity, or move through burnout using metaphor and symbol. It’s more forward-focused and doesn’t involve diagnosis or treatment.
06 — Do you provide art materials for virtual sessions?
Since sessions are virtual, you’ll use materials you already have at home. I’ll help you choose what feels accessible and sensory-friendly—pencils, markers, yarn, collage scraps, or digital tools. No fancy supplies needed.
07 — Where do sessions happen?
All sessions are held virtually, through a secure telehealth platform. You can join from a quiet or comfortable space in your home, surrounded by your materials, your comforts, and your pace. Noise-canceling headphones, fidgets, or weighted blankets are always welcome.
08 — Do you accept insurance?
Not at this time. Sessions are private-pay, and my fees are structured to keep therapy accessible and sustainable. I’m happy to provide a superbill for potential out-of-network reimbursement if your insurance allows.
09 — Do you offer group sessions or workshops?
Workshops are in development and will focus on fiber arts, identity, symbolism, sensory awareness, and creative self-reflection. Future groups may explore themes like neurodivergent identity, body connection, or mindful making. Sign up for the newsletter to stay in the loop.
10 — I’m neurodivergent / LGBTQIA+. Is this space for me?
Yes—absolutely. Healing Threads was created with you in mind. This is a space where your sensory needs, identity, communication style, and pacing are honored. You don’t need to mask, explain, or change who you are to be understood.
You are welcome here, exactly as you are.
