Frequently Asked Questions.

01 — What exactly is art therapy?

Art therapy is a form of therapy that uses creative expression to help people process emotions and experiences. Sometimes, it's hard to put our thoughts into words—but art can speak for us in powerful ways. In art therapy, you might use paint, drawing, collage, or sculpt to explore your inner world. With the guidance of a trained art therapist, this process becomes a way to untangle emotion, connect with your story, and move toward healing.

Art therapy isn’t about making “good” art—it’s about making meaning. If you’re curious about starting, feel free to reach out for a free consultation.

02 — Do I need to be good at art to do this?

Not at all. Art therapy is about expression, not perfection. You don’t need to have any prior experience with art. It’s more like visual journaling or symbolic storytelling—using colors, textures, or images to explore what’s hard to put into words. Think of it as a way to speak in shapes and threads when language feels too small.

03 — Will we always use fiber arts in sessions?

Not necessarily. While I often draw from fiber arts and metaphors like weaving, stitching, or unraveling, our sessions will use whatever medium feels most supportive to you—whether that’s drawing, collage, visual journaling, or simply talking. Some clients love tactile, fiber-based work; others don’t. There’s no one right way to create here—just space to explore at your own pace.

04 — What happens in a session?

Every session is shaped by your needs. Some days, we might make art the entire time. Other days might include talking, pausing, or gently exploring a single prompt. You might draw, stitch, gather colors, or simply reflect. There’s no pressure to perform—just permission to show up as you are.

05 — What’s the difference between art therapy and creative coaching?

Art therapy is a form of mental health treatment provided by a trained, credentialed therapist (that’s me!). It's rooted in clinical practice, ethics, and trauma-informed care. We might work with themes like identity, grief, nervous system regulation, or emotional processing through the lens of creativity.

Creative coaching is non-clinical and ideal for folks who want to:

  • Reignite creativity

  • Explore identity through art

  • Move through creative blocks

  • Tend to burnout or life transitions through metaphor and symbol

Coaching is more forward-focused and doesn’t involve diagnosis or treatment.

06 — Do you provide art materials for virtual sessions?

Since sessions are virtual, you’ll use materials you already have at home. I’ll help you figure out what’s accessible and supportive—this could include pencils, markers, collage scraps, yarn, or digital art tools. No fancy supplies needed.

For workshops, you'll receive info ahead of time about what’s provided and what you may need to bring to help everything run smoothly.

07 — Where do sessions happen?

All sessions are held virtually, through a secure telehealth platform. You can join from a quiet space in your home—surrounded by your materials, your comforts, and your pace.

08 — Do you accept insurance?

No, currently we do not accept insurance for our services. We operate on a private pay basis, and our fees are designed to make art therapy as accessible and affordable as possible for our clients.

09 — Do you offer group sessions or workshops?

Workshops are currently in development and will focus on fiber arts, identity, symbolism, and creative self-reflection. Announcements will be made through the newsletter—be sure to sign up if you’d like to stay in the loop.

10 — I’m neurodivergent / LGBTQIA+. Is this space for me?

Yes—absolutely. Healing Threads was created with you in mind. This is a space where your sensory needs, identity, communication style, and pacing are honored. You don’t need to mask, explain, or change who you are. You are welcome here, exactly as you are.

No pressure, no rush—just a quiet moment to connect.
